Welcome to the life of a junior doctor: 97-hour weeks, life and death decisions, a constant tsunami of bodily fluids, and the hospital parking meter earns more than you.

Scribbled in secret after endless days, sleepless nights and missed weekends, Adam Kay's This is Going to Hurt provides a no-holds-barred account of his time on the NHS front line. Hilarious, horrifying and heartbreaking, this diary is everything you wanted to know – and more than a few things you didn't – about life on and off the hospital ward.

As seen on ITV's Zoe Ball Book Club.

This edition includes extra diary entries and a new afterword by the author.

  • Unputdownable

This is a well written, very funny but also very sad book. It gives a real flavour of what it is like to be a doctor in the NHS with much humour but also much frustration and tragedy. It is a book about high expectations and human frailty, written with wit and humour. Fantastic read.

I couldn’t put this down, I immediately came to check for any other books by Adam Kay. Brilliant insight into the life of a doctor and laugh out loud funny at times too.

Wow! I knew hospitals were run off their feet, busy but this opened my eyes in a way that made me laugh out loud, whilst also making me terrified for the future of our wonderful NHS. Something HAS to be done to ensure that the NHS can thrive but also to recognise the incredible pressure that it’s staff and resources are under. Something MUST be done. Sit up and take notice Government- even you aren’t immune to the affect this pressure can and does have on this wonderful institution- have a care!
  • Funny, sad, truthful and a must read.

This is proof that our wonderful NHS staff are over worked, under paid, treated appallingly, budgets stripped back to barely anything, extra patients and still the media gets it wrong. I think that anyone who’s used the NHS at some point in their life should spend the time to read this. Dr Adam Kay worked until our health service almost broke him. Currently this book is sitting in my ‘to re-read’ pile. 5 stars for sure! *****

  • Heartbreakingly funny

I couldn’t put this book down! It had me laughing on the train so hard I had tears running down my face... and lots of odd looks. Read it in a day.... it is hilarious, poignant and tragic. A lot of my close family work for the beloved NHS and have told stories of both some of the crackers patients come out with and also their crazy shifts! Kay has the perfect balance in this book, yes it has you in laughing fits but it also reminds you that it takes certain type of people to work in the NHS; you would never get into it for the money and these people are the only reason the NHS is going. And you hope that if you ever really desperately need the NHS you don’t have a doctor who’s pulled a 16 hour shift for the 5th day in the row who’s also trying to study for a an an exam.....
